If we ever really had a national identity, it’s long gone. At best we have regional identities. I think it is hard for immigrants to fully grasp how different the US culture is, from region to region. Unless they travel a lot for work etc. When I have lived in more secular parts of the country, I would often wish that I could show the local Orthodox community how based other states can be.
