Listen now | Erdogan, Assad, Putin SUMMIT? Cyprus election debrief, Bakhmut analysis, Kurds named Israeli proxies, Andrew Tate, & more in the final episode of 2022!
I have a Cypriot friend who said that the reason why the turnout was low was precisely because of what happened, they knew the Synod wouldn’t choose the person who got the most votes.
Yea I figured that’s the case as well, it’s like that in many places.
As a separate question: As Turkey keeps pivoting East, do you think this will determine who is the next Ecumenical Patriarch? It’s my understanding that the Turkish government has a say in the next EP, could the next EP be pro-Russian?
the EP is influenced in what they are allowed to say about Greco-Turkish relations by Turkey and the EP has to be a Turkish citizen but the real shot callers in the Phanar right now is the US state dept.
There was actually an interesting article I had read about how even in the mid-19th century, during the Crimean War, the British were already starting to influence the Phanar; but that influence wasn't quite what it would be under Meletios Metaxakis (1921-23), because there was a lot of Patriarchs coming in and out of office in those final decades of the Ottoman Empire. Below is the article I was mentioning:
While we are on the same team, I can't help but disagree with your rather optimistic positions.
Would you be willing to debate the topic of Russia's performance in the war in a constructive format?
what format would you suggest? we are interested
